Adoptions from Taiwan
WACAP opened its Taiwan program in 2011 after establishing relationships with several licensed child-placing agencies in Taiwan that seek permanent loving families for Taiwanese children in need.
Currently, the Taiwan government is amending their child welfare laws, including the laws that address adoption. Some of the changes are designed to promote domestic adoption as well as refine intercountry adoption procedures. While these changes are currently causing some delays in the intercountry adoption process, adoptions from Taiwan are still taking place. Families interested in adopting from Taiwan should be aware that time frames and processes may change without notice.

The children of Taiwan
In Taiwan, boys and girls in need of adoption range in age from 6 months to 15 years. Families may state their desire to adopt an infant as young as possible, but must be open to an infant up to 12 months of age. There are many children who are toddler-aged or older as well as siblings in need of families. Most children referred for adoption from Taiwan are relinquished by their birth mothers shortly after birth. However, some children may also have been relinquished due to medical needs. Occasionally children are removed by government authorities from their birth families due to abuse or neglect.
Because Taiwanese birth mothers are frequently involved in the selection of the adoptive family, it is not unusual for the birth mother to request an open adoption. The degree of the openness is based on the request made by the birth mother. In some cases, the birth family will request a meeting at the time of placement and/or letters and photos after placement. In other cases, the birth mother might only request ongoing correspondence after placement. Due to this, families entering the Taiwan program must be flexible and committed to honoring a birth mother’s wishes. To learn more about the Taiwan program’s process or fees please contact us.
