Adoptions from Ethiopia
Over the past year, the Ethiopian adoption process has come under scrutiny by both the U.S. government and the Ethiopian government. With the goal of making improvements, the Ethiopian government has initiated various reforms to the adoption procedures. Several of these reform actions have significantly impacted the estimated wait times and predictability of the process. These actions include the closure of several orphanages as well as limitations placed on the number of cases processed by the Ethiopian courts each day. WACAP anticipates that these changes and potential changes in the futures may continue to impact adoptions.
In 2007, WACAP became one of a select few agencies licensed to offer adoption services for children in Ethiopia. Since then, WACAP has brought more than 200 children home to loving American families.
WACAP has an office in Ethiopia’s capital city of Addis Ababa, with staff experienced in working with government officials, orphanage staff, and adoptive families to make the dreams of Ethiopian children in need of adoption and adoptive families come true.
The children of Ethiopia
Families looking to adopt from Ethiopia will find that some babies and children are robust and in good overall health. Other children have suffered from severe malnutrition and perhaps a variety of infectious diseases (e.g., tuberculosis and/or malaria). Some children come from a loving family that suffered a tragedy or circumstances that prevented them from parenting, and some from an orphanage where they received proper nutrition and education. Other children come from a rural area where their birth family experienced poverty, deprivation and lack of medical care. These children may have never had the opportunity to attend school, let alone receive sufficient nutrition for proper growth and development. Families must be open to the range of these possibilities.
WACAP opened a transitional home in Addis Ababa in 2008. The majority of children placed with WACAP families are cared for in this transitional home for one to three months prior to the child traveling to the United States.
